The congressman was born Harold Watson Gowdy III on the 22nd of August 1964 in Greenville, South Carolina. His mother’s name is Novalene while his father’s name is Harold Watson Gowdy Jr. He has three sisters; Laura, Caroline, and Elizabeth.

Upon leaving school, Gowdy went to work as a clerk for a judge in the South Carolina Court of Appeals and then for another in the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina. These clerkships helped him to acquire useful experience that prompted him to go into private practice. Gowdy was in private practice for three years with a prominent law firm known as Nelson Mullins Riley and Scarborough.
In 1994, Trey Gowdy made his first foray into public service when he was appointed as a federal prosecutor. He spent six years in the office and prosecuted several highly wanted criminals. In 2001, Gowdy was elected to the office of district attorney for South Carolina’s 7th judicial circuit. He continued his impressive prosecution record there, holding the office till 2010. A year before that, he had declared for House of Reps and had to overcome stiff opposition, especially at the primaries, to emerge victorious in 2010. He was in office for four terms of two years each before deciding not to seek re-election in 2018. He revealed that he was done with politics and will be returning to private law practice.
